Does Foundation and BB Cream Clog Your Pores?

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

A couple of months ago, I found my skin getting really awful. I had clogged pores, dehydrated yet oily skin, plenty of pimples and at one point I even eczema on my face! Things got better after I restarted using the Jurlique sensitive skincare range. However, my pores were still getting clogged up despite numerous de-clogging efforts (eg. extraction, masking, scrubbing etc).

In December, I started on my 1-month sabbatical leave from work. I was basically home most of the time, working on projects and left the house only 2-3 times a week for spots of shopping, and 2-3 hour classes. As a result, I only wore my sunblock and a light dusting of face powder when I went out.

Guess what happened?

Yep, my skin is no longer clogged! I don't even feel the need to mask and scrub 2-3 times a week.

I'm now thinking it must be the BB Cream and foundation that was clogging up my pores!

When I first came across BB cream, I thought it was the miracle solution. Skincare and makeup in one! In fact, some BB cream felt like they were doing pretty good stuff on my skin. Add to that the fact that I was religiously double-cleansing my skin to thoroughly remove makeup, I thought everything was going well. I certainly did not expect that BB cream and foundation would cause problems like clogged pores.

What do you think about this?

Sponsored Review: Fancl Limited Edition Dance Series

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

Long-time readers of my blog know that Fancl is a favourite brand of mine. I had previously positively reviewed their Mild Cleansing Oil in a non-sponsored comparison review post.

Fancl products are preservative-free to assure no potentially harmful preservatives and additives will damage your skin and health. Hence, it has a "safety and gentleness" assurance.

Recently, I received some of Fancl's famed cleansing products in their Limited Edition release containers. The products within are the same quality items but the containers are beautifully illustrated designs that can be kept and re-used.

There are in total three limited edition designs: Ballet Dance, Hula Dance and Samba Dance, all illustrated by Japanese Fashion Illustrator Licaco.

Clinique has launched its own BB Cream in November, which is available at Clinique counters for US $21 at Asia Pacific airports and Duty Free Downtown stores as well as selected airlines.

Targeted at frequent travellers, the Clinique Age Defence BB Cream promises to be the skin-perfecting, multi-tasking cream for the jet-setting woman. It contains SPF 30/PA+++, that provides broad coverage from Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. Other active ingredients include caffeine, that calms and soothes irritated skin while reducing appearance of lines and wrinkles, glycyrrhetinic acid that reduces skin irritation from stress, and a seaweed extract that reduces production of oil.

I was sent a tube of the BB Cream for review.

Fronted by S.H.E, a popular Taiwanese girl group whose members are Selina Jen, Hebe Tien, and Ella Chen, Heme, a Taiwanese beauty brand is huge on cute and sweet packaging. As I am writing this, I feel compelled to just send out a word of prayer for Selina, who was in the news recently, for having suffered severe burns in a filming accident.

I've mainly seen Heme products on Watsons shelves and recently received a set of skincare from the brand for review. The first thing that caught my eye is the pink-pink-pink packaging. It's just the right shade of pink that spells cute and sweet. Just the sort of shade that I like.

Here are the products that were sent to me.

The Truth About Beauty

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

Just read an interesting article about the psychology of beauty.

It makes a valid argument against those who are riled up by people who place importance on looking good. I feel it is particularly relevant for us beauty bloggers who sometimes receive criticism for being so-called "superficial".

I especially like this statement it makes about the striving to make ourselves better, even in terms of appearances.
"We consider it admirable when people strive to better themselves intellectually; we don't say, "Hey, you weren't born a genius, so why ever bother reading a book?" Why should we treat physical appearance any differently? For example, research shows that men prefer women with full lips, smaller chins, and large eyes—indicators of higher levels of estrogen. Some lucky women have big eyes; others just seem to, thanks to the clever application of eyeshadow. As the classic commercial says, "Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline." (If it increases her options, who cares which it is?)."

And this point that it makes about taking a balanced and truthful approach when handling our own self-esteem and looks.
"French women ... take pleasure in cultivating their appearance, and in accentuating their physical differences from men. They don't give up on looking after their looks as they age, nor do they tart themselves up like sexy schoolgirls at 50. They simply take pride in their appearance and try to look like sensual, older women."
"Like French women, we, too, need to understand that a healthy approach to beauty is neither pretending it's unnecessary or unimportant nor making it important beyond all else."

Disaster of the Diabolical Bath Foams

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

I had a series of shower foam mishaps in the month of October.

Somehow, I have a very bad memory and I couldn't recall why I had to use such "expensive" organic bath foams and handmade soaps. So last month, I attempted to be thrifty by getting some commercial shower foams that come in large quantities for an attractive price.

Through the weeks, I had one disaster after another. I shall  do a short and quick recap of each shower foam I tried in sequence. Hopefully you can benefit from my learning experiences.

Review: Jurlique Sensitive Skin Care

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

My skin was acting up with all sorts of blotches, rashes, pimples and bumps in the past few months. It felt tight and dry, yet oily at the same time. I thought I should return to one of the basic skincare staples that got my skin in order in the past.

Here's what I used to get things back to their normal state: Jurlique's Chamomile Soothing Mist, Soothing Herbal Recovery Gel, and Herbal Recovery Eye Gel. Coincidentally, I purchased these items at the right time. There's a 50% discount on the price of Soothing Herbal Recovery Gel now, with a purchase of one full-priced item.

It has proven to be the trusty rescue for me once again. My skin is getting back its natural balance and while I have a few scars left to clear up, I'm on the way to recovery.

Jurlique is an Australian brand and in the past, when I used to be in Australia a lot, I found Jurlique to be, for me, the best skincare that can be purchased there. I know the brand doesn't get plenty of raves on review sites like Makeup Alley. In fact, some people complain it's overpriced and that the products do nothing for them.

Skincare Woes Never End in the Eternal Search for "Perfection"

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

Just when I thought my skin was behaving well and I finally got my skincare down to a nice routine, my skin made a sudden turn and is wrecking my peace of mind! It's getting very oily but dehydrated, and my dark circles are worse.

I'm not sure what is the cause of this change. It could be stress, it could be me consuming too much sugar and caffeine due to stress, or it could be hormones (though I'm too young yet for menopause).

Whatever it may be, now I have half finished bottles of skincare that are doing nada for me. I need to go pick up some new stuff and have another round of trial and error.

How annoying, isn't it?

What about you? Do you experience this? How do you solve or deal with it?

Maybe I should learn to just buy small bottles of everything. It would end up being more economical in the long run, wouldn't it?

Review: Skinfood Mushroom BB Cream

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

My main computer died on me suddenly last night! It refuses to boot up! All the photos which I recently took and uploaded to the computer have been deleted from the cameras, but unfortunately were not backed up on my external harddrive. Very sad, isn't it? I wonder if it's worth the effort and money to try to retrieve my files from that computer.

I'm now typing on my travel laptop, which is a little slow-going for me, because I'm not used to this keypad. Anyway, I'm thinking about whether I should hurry and get another computer. Maybe I could take some time off the virtual world and spend a little more time on my other interests?

Fortunately, I had already uploaded to the web my photos for this review. So I am still able to share with you my thoughts about one of my favourite BB Creams: Skinfood Mushroom BB Cream.

Haul: Paul & Joe

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

While I was pretty disciplined and avoided hauling too much during the Great Singapore Sale in June and July this year, I caved-in to temptation more than a few times recently, lured by alot of nice shopping deals for the newer Summer and Fall collections. Among these recent temptations was the Isetan Sale where Paul and Joe items were going at 20% off. There were also some good packaged sets from Paul and Joe to be had at a nice price.

It's been some time since I last bought Paul and Joe, and I didn't get to any of the latest warehouse sales, so I took the opportunity to get some items I'd been thinking of buying but held off when they were first released.

I really adore the Paul and Joe packaging. Such nice patterns on the boxes!

Trying Out New Nail Polish Colours

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

Photo has been digitally altered to save readers
from looking clearly at my horrific manicure efforts! ^__^;;

Lately, I've been seeing lots of pretty green-blue nail polish colours on the blogs and I wanted one for myself. Is green-blue a latest season colour? I'm not sure, I don't keep up with nail polish trends. :D

But anyway, since I only paint my toenails, I seldom buy high-end nail polish and my search on the drugstore shelves brought me to this last bottle of Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear which was on 20% discount at Watsons last week.

The colour is Marine Scene. Something quite different from what I normally prefer, which would be neutrals. I think I could get hooked on these vibrant colours and I might just look for some more daring colours to try.

Report: Scientists Make Artificial Skin for Tests

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

Ultra-cute!

Looking at or touching fluffy animals like rabbits make me feel happy. In principle, I don't want animals to suffer for my beauty but I previously seldom took the effort to stop buying products from companies that tested on animals. Recently, I've managed to be more conscious and made some animal-friendly changes to my buying habits. So I was very glad to read: "Scientific American reported that researchers now have a new way of testing toxicity that doesn't involve adorable, helpless (and scientifically useful) animals. Instead, it involves lab-grown human skin." ... read more.

What about you? Do you make a conscious effort to avoid products that have been tested on animals? Or to only buy from companies that do not test on animals?

The Neutrogena Wave Duo is the latest offering from Neutrogena’s innovative Neutrogena Wave line of products. It now comes with two different cleansing modes for both gentle and deep-pore cleansing.

I was sent a Neutrogena Wave Duo for trial and review. I had previously purchased the first generation Neutrogena Wave and had been happy with using it for a once-a-week exfoliation and deep cleansing treatment. Placed side-by-side with the Neutrogena Wave, the main difference in the Neutrogena Wave Duo is the dual button for the two new cleansing modes.

Sponsored Review: Mentholatum Mojitate Kajitsu and Deep Moist Lipbalms

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

The Samplestore recently sent me Mentholatum's Mojitate Kajitsu and Deep Moist Lipbalms for testing and review. Naturally, I was very keen to try them out, because I'm a self-confessed lipbalm "addict". I like having the lush, smooth feeling of moisturised lips that come from putting on lipbalm regularly.

Mentholatum is the number one best selling lipbalm brand in Japan and the Mogitate Kajitsu lipbalm series was launched in Singapore recently. I received 3 flavours of Mentholatum's Mojitate Kajitsu Lipbalms and 2 flavours of Deep Moist Lipbalms. And an offer to let my readers know about a contest (keep reading!)

"Mojitate" means "Fresh" and "Kajitsu" means "Fruits" in Japanese. The "juicy" Mojitate Kajitsu lipbalms comes in 5 different fruit mixes: Strawberry, Grape & Berry, Orange & Mango, White Peach and Lemon and Lime. Mojitate Kajitsu lipbalms are made with fresh fruit juice and also contains Honey, which heals and renews the lips; Squalene that is easily absorbed and helps reduce wrinkles; Grape Seed Oil that repairs the skin; and Vitamin A and E, antioxidants that retard lip aging and give lips a healthy shine.

Review: Ginvera Green Tea Marvel Gel

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

Recently I found out that Ginvera products are sold, with great success, overseas in countries like Japan. Hence, I decided I need to give some Ginvera products a try. Ginvera is a local brand and I believe we should support local products especially if they are effective and famous overseas, right? How could I have missed such a star brand when it's easily and cheaply available right in my backyard?

Image from Ginvera website

The first product I tried was Ginvera Marvel Gel with Green Tea. It was on sale at Watsons so I picked up a tube at a very affordable price. Even without a sale the price is very reasonable, being half of that of comparative products from overseas. The local packaging is slightly different, being totally green instead of white, but the product is the same.

Review: Shu Uemura White Recovery Ex+ Instant Spot Brightener

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

I've been using Shu Uemura White Recovery Ex+ Instant Spot Brightener - Brightening Treatment since early this year and found it outperforms every spot lightening treatment product I've tried thus far.

Image from Shu Uemura US Website

It's lightly tinted and can be used to cover up scars or dark spots under make-up but at the same time is a treatment product that lightens the dark spots as you use it. I find that my dark freckles and scars are lightened significantly and quickly within a week. It's a pricey product but since it works, I highly recommend it if you find you want something effective to deal with dark freckles or scars. According to Shu Uemura:
  • prune extract : helps to clarify skin
  • sakura leaf extract : helps to improve skin texture and soothe the skin
  • vitamin c derivative : reduces melanin production. 24-hour release of vitamin c
Ingredients list from Shu Uemura US Website:
sea water , cyclohexasiloxane , isohexadecane , nylon-12, propylene glycol, hdi/trimethylol hexyllactone crosspolymer, ci 77891 / titanium dioxide, titanium dioxide, peg-10 dimethicone, isopropyl lauroyl sarcosinate, trimethylsiloxysilicate, hydroxyethylpiperazine ethane sulfonic acid, methylsilanol/silicate crosspolymer, disteardimonium hectorite, nylon-611/dimethicone copolymer, bis-peg/ppg-14/14 dimethicone , phenoxyethanol, magnesium sulfate, aluminum hydroxide, capryloyl salicylic acid, caprylyl glycol, mica, dimethicone, methylparaben, chlorphenesin, methicone, ci 77491, ci 77492 / iron oxides, cyclopentasiloxane, c9-15 fluoroalcohol phosphates / c9-15 fluoroalcohol phosphate, prunus yedoensis leaf extract, hydrolyzed prunus domestica

Review: DHC Salicylic Acid Toner

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^

This article was originally posted at http://aichakubeautification.blogspot.com. If you see it anywhere else without credit, the content is stolen without permission.

I had been battling my cranky ultra-reactive skin since April! My skin had been both super-clogged, super-oily and dry at the same time, if it makes any sense? It was very hard to deal with, since I couldn't use the usual oily-skin products to combat the clogging. Some days I even had small bumps like mini-pimples all over my t-zone. :( It took some time to calm my skin down. Using my usual regimen of Impress IC products didn't work, so I had to find some way of unclogging my skin without over-drying it. I'll spare you the blow-by-blow trial-and-error details, and get straight to the item that worked a minor miracle for me. I took a chance on it on a whim during a sale and fortunately it worked out well. It's based on the fact that I read something about Salicylic Acid online and went out looking for a suitable formulation.
Photo from DHC

Salicylic acid

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Salicylic acid (from Latin salix, willow tree, from the bark of which the substance is obtained) is a beta hydroxy acid. This colorless crystalline organic acid is widely used in organic synthesis and functions as a plant hormone. It is derived from the metabolism of salicin. In addition to being a compound that is chemically similar to but not identical to the active component of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), it is probably best known for its use in anti-acne treatments. As with other beta hydroxy acids, salicylic acid is a key ingredient in many skin-care products for the treatment of acne, psoriasis, calluses, corns, keratosis pilaris, and warts.[12] It works as both a keratolytic and comedolytic agent by causing the cells of the epidermis to shed more readily, opening clogged pores and neutralizing bacteria within, preventing pores from clogging up again by constricting pore diameter, and allowing room for new cell growth.[13] I decided to try out DHC's Salicylic Acid Toner because it is alcohol-free, contains numerous helpful botanicals and it's reported to be one of the least drying Salicylic Acid products. Although it's supposed to be for acne, I used it for the purpose of clearing up my pores. It was mild enough to be not overly drying and did not trigger any redness. In fact, I think the botanicals added some moisturising. At the same time, I could feel my pores slowly clearing up and unclogging, something which even regular masking and scrubbing couldn't do. At the beginning, I used it twice a day. Once my skin settled down, I reduced it to once a day, at night. As of today, my skin has gotten back to normal, albeit with some scarring (from my over-enthusiastic picking at my skin), and it's starting to feel too dry to use daily, so I'm back to my usual Impress IC regimen and using this toner once every 2-3 days This product is worth considering if you are looking for a product to unclog your pores and yet provide some hydration. It is also very reasonably priced locally (in Singapore at Watsons), not far from the Japanese retail price.

My Guerlain Ombre Eclat 4 Couleurs "Collection"

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ Wanted to give you something new and nicer to look at, (rather than my ugly skin in my previous post!) so here's a picture-intensive post. :D I tried out Guerlain last year, starting with the Meteorites, then later their eyeshadow and other base makeup. I loved all their makeup products, but especially became hooked on the soft texture, sheer but buildable pigment and classy colour combinations of Guerlain's Ombre Eclat 4 Couleurs eyeshadow palettes. They are very work-friendly yet also able to create interesting, striking eye looks. The palettes quickly multiplied into this bunch that you see in this post today. I love using them on a daily basis. I've purchased every one of these at a discount but I confess I'd be willing to part with my money for the limited edition palettes at full price if need be. Recently, I picked up one of their blush as well. I really enjoy Guerlain's beautifiul packaging as well as the quality of the products. I'll just leave you with the photos. Hope you enjoy them. :D

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ Thanks to Neutrogena for giving me this chance to try the products. It's time to give a review of the Neutrogena Hydro Boost products, after about 1 week's usage. Overall, I found the products to be very comfortable to use. When applied, the products give a sense of high water content and moisturisation. There is no oiliness or stickiness; everything is absorbed quickly upon application. However, I did not like the very strong clinical scent. Some people have mentioned it smells flowery, but I personally can't place the smell. I also found my skin felt very dry if I don't use my usual moisturiser and the cleanser felt abit too strong. Further, after about 4-5 days of use, I found my skin became bumpy and my pores became very clogged up, even in areas like my cheeks where I normally don't have a clogged-pore problem. :( This is strange because my skin felt dry yet clogged! And I normally use heavier products, but those have not clogged my pores. :( At first, I thought it's because I've eaten too much sugar and dairy but after I stopped using the products, my skin returned to normal, even when I continued eating sugary and dairy stuff. I've not tried the mask yet. Here are photos of my skin, after use of each product. Again, photos have not been processed. Bare skin, after cleansing with Hydro Boost Mousse Cleanser. The clear cleanser liquid pumps out into a mousse form. About 1-2 pumps is more than sufficient for cleansing off oil and dirt, however it is not a makeup remover. It leaves a light oily film after rinsing but after drying off, I find my skin feeling tight and dry. You can see my clogged and dry pores!!!!!!!! T_T This is after application of the Hydro Boost Clear Lotion. Perhaps this is one of my favourite items from the range. It does not sting and provides a quick boost of hydration. You can see my skin is more hydrated after using it. The Hydro Boost Essence, I applied after the lotion, which is my usual procedure for most essences. It feels light and absorbs quickly. However, I did not feel it boosted hydration alot and I generally felt that 1 pump was not really hydrating enough. After application of the Hydro Boost Water Gel. Very strange, does my skin appear to get progressively drier in the photos? It's not a wrong sequence. I was careful. Ok, finally, when I used the products, I felt like alot of hydration was absorbed into my skin when I applied the products, so that is very good. But I was shocked at the photos. They proved my skin became drier and clogged. The products also did not leave a layer of protection that I'm used to with my other products. Also overall, the oilier parts of my face fared better than the drier parts of my face. Hence, I conclude that this set of products is better for people with oilier skin. If you'd like to try these products, here are the prices provided from Neutrogena. I did a search on other reviews and the products did receive good reviews from other people, so I do think it really depends on your skin. Perhaps mine is too dry and sensitive.
• Hydro Boost Mousse Cleanser - $15.80
• Hydro Boost Clear Lotion - $13.50
• Hydro Boost Water Gel - $20.90
• Hydro Boost Essence - $16.90
• Hydro Boost Mask - $31.50

Preview: Neutrogena Hydro Boost

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ Hyaluronic Acid is one of the wonder-ingredients in many skincare and cosmetic products, and it is one of the key ingredients in Neutrogena's Hydro Boost range of skincare products.
"Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan (GAG), which is a substance that attaches to collagen and elastin to form cartilage. HA not only helps keep the cartilage that cushions joints strong and flexible, but also helps increase supplies of joint-lubricating synovial fluid. Hyaluronic acid is present in every tissue of the body, and it performs many important functions. It helps deliver nutrients to and carry toxins from cells that do not have a blood supply, such as those found in cartilage; without adequate amounts of HA, the joints will become brittle and deteriorate. Not only does it keep joints lubricated, but hyaluronic acid also encourages water retention in other bodily tissues. Hyaluronic acid is gaining popularity in the cosmetic and medical industries. Cosmetic products containing hyaluronic acid claim to hydrate the skin, allowing it to appear smoother and more radiant. Clinical studies have shown that it also helps wounds heal more quickly, and can reduce the appearance of both old and new scars. Injectible hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Restylane, are being to lessen the appearance of lines, sagging and depressions in the skin caused by acne scars or injury. "
Neutrogena's Hydro Boost range of products promises to deliver an intensive hydration boost with its innovative Progressive Release System that not only releases moisture steadily into the skin for continuous all-day hydration but also addresses the root causes of inner skin dryness. Combining advanced hydrating elements that replenishes and repairs skin from within, Hydro Boost promises to protect the skin from the damaging effects of the environment. It has a unique formulation containing highly-purified hyaluronic acid which absorbs up to 1,000 times its weight in water and releases it into skin steadily over time, and olive extract derived from highly purified olive oil, which effectively rebuilds skin's natural moisture shield, preventing moisture loss. It is dermatologist tested, with an oil-free and non-comedogenic formulation that promises instant absorbsion into the skin and hydrate with a non-greasy feel. The Hydro Boost range of products includes Hydro Boost Mousse Cleanser, Hydro Boost Clear Lotion, Hydro Boost Essence, Hydro Boost Water Gel and Hydro Boost Mask. I have been sent a set of the entire range of Neutrogena Hydro Boost products and will be trying them over the next few days. Currently this is my clean, unmade-up skin, photo is un-touched and shows my pores and freckles (ugh) in their full "glory". This photo was taken last night, right after cleansing and before my skincare regimen, ie. bare skin with no creams/lotions on it. My skin is on the dry side, aging (so ok, I'm a couple of years shy of 40, so it's inevitable) and very fragile/sensitive/hyper-reactive. My current skincare regimen includes face wash, lotion, serums and creams from Kanebo Impress, Impress IC and Skinceuticals. I will halt use of my personal products, with the exception of my whitening serums (which the Hydro Boost collection does not have). I will also continue using Shu Uemura cleansing oil which is my current makeup remover (oh this reminds me I should do a post on the cleansing oils that I bought). I will be reviewing each of the products and providing more information in detail over the next few days and will post photos of the status of my skin as I use the products. Hope you enjoy this "experimental" new way of reviewing products, which I hope provides a more structured and "scientific" review process. © Copyright. All rights reserved.

Beautification Tip Day

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ Has this happened to you? You wash your face thoroughly, apply cleansing masks regularly, deep cleanse, exfoliate, apply cleansing toners, use blackhead extractors, etc, etc and yet, you feel like your skin is getting oilier and oiler, despite what you do? Sometimes, the oil also seems clogged up in the pores and your skin feels rough to touch? Recently, this happened to my skin and I couldn't fathom what was wrong! I actually put off applying the heavier lotions and creams that I used to apply. Yet, my skin felt super oily. Oil was emerging from pores I didn't use to see before. At one point, I thought I was experiencing some hormonal changes. However I discovered something by experience. One evening, I decided I needed to just use my hydrating sheet mask as I started seeing dry lines on my skin, despite all the oil that was pouring out of my skin. And you know what? My skin returned to normal!! Yep, my skin plumped up and the lines were less prominent the next day. Best of all, the oil field that my face had become stopped producing and slowly returned to normal. I've read that it's possible to over-stimulate your skin's oil production by drying it out too much. Every skin needs hydration and if you dry out your skin, the skin will try to compensate by producing more oil. Now, why didn't I remember that before I started panicking and using clay masks by the bucket? If you skin is behaving very oily, try introducing some hydration. Either in the form of an oil-free moisturiser/serum or using oil-free masks with lots of watery hydrating serums. Oil-free because, you don't need to introduce more oil to your oily or acne-prone skin. Additionally, drinking water and eating juicy fruits and vegetables will also hydrate your skin from the inside out. © Copyright. All rights reserved.

Review: Montagne Jeunesse Masks

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ I received a press kit with some Montagne Jeunesse wash-off/peel-off masks and a eye-mask to try. They arrived in a very pretty package! I was informed that Montagne Jeunesse used to be in Singapore and as of end of last year, the brand returned to Singapore shores with stores like Watsons and John Little stocking the products. Each mask comes in single-use packs with about 10-20 ml/g worth of product inside. Face masks I was given included Blemish Mud (Skin Clearning, with Aloe Vera and Willow), Cucumber Peel-off Mask, Chocolate Mud Mask, Sauna Masque and Sensitive Skin Masque. There was also one Anti-Shadow Eye Mask, which came in 2x2 patches. The most impressive of the range that I tried was the Sauna Masque. It heated up and made my skin "sweat" underneath the layer of mask. After I rinsed off, there didn't seem to be any difference, but after I put on my softening lotion, I suddenly felt my pores needed some extraction, so I pressed and alot of clogged stuff came out! Woot! Very very impressive. I have too many masks to finish using but this is one mask I'll purchase when I feel I need some deep cleansing action. Other masks such as their Chocolate Mud Mask are gentle enough for sensitive/hyper-reactive skins like mine, are hydrating, and provide a spa-like experience at home because they smell DELISH to boot! There is a wide range of masks available for many different purposes. For example, the Sensitive Skin Masque comes in one pack that contains 2 separate products. One part of the pack contains product for Step 1: an anti-stress mask with Zen Flower to deep cleanse and nourish the skin. After Step 1, you tear open another part of the pack to apply Step 2: a serum with rehydrating ceramides that promises ultra-moisturisation. Very innovative! I checked out the prices of the masks in the stores and they are very affordable. Furthermore, I think they are very popular because I often see the items are out-of-stock from the shelves. I don't remember Montagne Jeunesse at all, maybe the last time they were here, I was too young and busy going out to disco or having fun with my friends? >_<" Nonetheless, I'm really glad that I have another range of affordable and effective masks to pick from, now that Montagne Jeunesse is on our shores. © Copyright. A Random Mid-week Post About Cupcakes & Stuffs

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ Hello. To begin this post: some cupcake porn. Chocolate cupcake, chocolate ganache glaze and whipped cream from a can, with sprinkles and such. Chocolate-chip cupcake, with honey-cream cheese frosting. Hmmm, the frosting looks abit too oily in the photo, maybe it's the honey? Son didn't like this flavour, even after adding a tonne of sprinkles, which justifies getting an electric mixer to make some buttercream frosting. ^_^ Baking, together with coffee and rice are the main barriers to my efforts to be healthier and eat more raw foods. Erm, key-word being "effort" ie. "trying". LOL. Now, for just some random talk about some beautification things, to get us over the middle of the work-week. My current favourite BB Cream is SkinFood Mushroom BB Cream. First time I bought only 1, I didn't expect to like it so much. Later, I bought doubles back from each of my trips to Korea. It costs too much here in Singapore. I'm down to just half of my last tube. I didn't expect to finish it so soon! T_T I still have alot of other base makeup to use but I have been happy with the convenience of the BB cream and neglected the rest. Maybe this is a great excuse to head to Seoul soon? Haha. I'd rather pay the air ticket, eat some nice Korean food, and shop in Seoul than buy BB Cream at Singapore SkinFood stores. (Caveat: I will only go to Seoul, not likely to venture outside Seoul again.) It has a nice texture, not too thick but good enough coverage for me, spreads evenly and easily with my fingers, great hydration but not too oily and also not too matte. Plus it's a good nice match for my skin tone. I like the smell too. Some herbal-ly, aloe-y scent. I purchased this Etude House Black Head Final Kit in Korea. I'm not sure about the price here in Singapore. Anyway, you're supposed to soak a cotton pad with the lotion and let it sit on your nose for about 10-15 minutes, so that your embedded blackheads will rise to the top and you can wipe it away. After which, you put on the pore-tightening cream. Well, forget about this set. It's pure rubbish. It did seem to make my skin smoother, which I think is the work of the pore-tightening cream, but I didn't feel any blackheads coming out of my pores. I think Etude is more for the young girls in Korea, if I'm not wrong, so sometimes I find the products are not too good for me. It might work better for the younger ladies. One of the books I'm dipping into once in a while is The New Science of Perfect Skin written by a scientist who has developed and tested products for brands like Estee Lauder and Loreal. It's a pretty good book with a nice balance of science, facts and personal opinion. Downside is that it's US/Euro-centric, with few Asian products or companies mentioned. So far, the only Japanese company discussed was Biore. Do check it out, it's published in 2008 so it's fairly current. © Copyright. All rights reserved.

What Do You Use to Clean Your Makeup Brushes?

Apologies: I used to put prices as a service for those who wanted to know, but I no longer do it. ^__^ As a clean-freak, I shampooed my brushes once a week and clean individual brushes daily after each use with a wet wipe. Several bloggers have been writing about washing makeup brushes regularly. Commonly, it is advised that you shampoo your brushes with a cleanser of your choice, rinse thoroughly with water, squeeze out all the water, then lay the brushes on the side to air dry. Recently, one of my brushes cracked, despite the care I had taken to prevent water from touching the wood handles and laying my brushes on the side to air dry. Fortunately, it's not one of my expensive brushes. But it triggered me to consider whether shampooing and then rinsing with water is really the best thing for my brushes, because somehow, I just can't completely prevent water from accidentally touching the wood handle. Thinking back, when I purchased a small travel set of brushes from Shu Uemura, the MA was appalled when I told her I shampoo and rinse my brushes with water. She said it's a total NO NO when it comes to Shu Uemura brushes, "You must NEVER (her emphasis) let your brushes touch water!" I was told Shu Uemura brushes "last forever" because of the quality and the way the brushes are maintained. "Our brushes at the counter are all cleaned this way, and see, they don't shed nor do they go out of shape. The handles are also still perfect," she told me. Looking at the brushes, I could see she was telling the truth. The brushes seem used (ie. I could tell they were not brand new) but not worn out or chipped. So, what was the secret? This. Shu Uemura Brush Cleaner. Yep, I bought a bottle. But it's so expensive, I use it only for my Shu Uemura brushes. Then it occured to me to look at the ingredient list. Top ingredient? Isopropyl Alcohol (sorry abit hard to photograph.) Which is exactly this. You can buy it for about SG$5 at the pharmacy. So this is what tried recently. I figure the other ingredients in the Shu Uemura Brush Cleaner list are for moisturising and the main ingredient serves the cleaning function. I wet a cotton pad with the Isoproply Alcohol. Dab my brush on it until all the colour is gone. Clean off the alcohol with a wet wipe. Squeeze dry the brush. Then lay it on the side to completely air dry. (Oops I reveal that I don't care for my Mac brushes as much as my Shu Uemura ones ... :0) Despite some misgivings and admonitions I've read about alcohol drying out your brushes, I actually found that my brushes are softer and less frizzy, compared to when I wet shampoo and wash them, regardless of the cleaner I use. I think using this method worked for me because I only use my brushes for powder applications. For people who apply wet/liquid/cream makeup with their brushes, a wet shampoo and water cleaning might still be necessary. Unlike Shu Uemura, Mac MAs say it is ok to wet shampoo your brushes. That's the instruction given for the Mac Brush Cleaner. Mac's Brush Cleanser has no ingredient list printed on the bottle, but it smells strongly of alcohol and there's a "Flammable" caution on the bottle. For daily cleaning in between uses, I picked up a bottle of Stage Keep It Clean Brush Cleaner. I just bought it, after reading Paris B's post. Check out what's the top ingredient, after water. ©Copyright. All rights reserved.
